Basic Life Support (BLS) - Adult

This is a simplified algorithm for educational purposes. Always follow the most current AHA guidelines and your local protocols in a clinical setting.

1

Verify Scene Safety

Ensure the scene is safe for you and the victim.

2

Check for Responsiveness

Tap the victim's shoulder and shout, 'Are you okay?'

3

Call for Help & AED

If unresponsive, shout for nearby help. Activate emergency response system (e.g., call a code). Get an AED or send someone to get one.

4

Check for Breathing & Pulse

Scan the chest for movement (5-10 seconds) and check for a carotid pulse simultaneously. If no breathing (or only gasping) and no pulse, start CPR.

5

Start CPR (30:2)

Begin high-quality chest compressions. Push hard (at least 2 inches deep) and fast (100-120 compressions per minute) on the center of the chest. Give 2 rescue breaths after every 30 compressions.

6

Use AED

As soon as the AED arrives, turn it on and follow the voice prompts. Attach pads to the victim's bare chest.

7

Follow AED Prompts

The AED will analyze the heart rhythm. If a shock is advised, ensure no one is touching the victim and press the shock button. Immediately resume CPR after the shock.

8

Continue CPR

Continue cycles of 30 compressions and 2 breaths until the person starts to move or emergency help takes over.
